Yaron Herman Trio
Jazz, 8pm in Centennial Theatre. Students $15.
Pianist Yaron Herman, an Israeli now living in Paris, is one of the most talented artists of the Parisian jazz musical scene. Before playing the piano, Yaron Herman played basketball in his native Israel, but a knee injury prevented him from pursuing the sport professionally. At 19, the young pianist, who had adopted his instrument only three years prior, landed in Paris. At 21, he developed a theory of musical improvisation, Real Time Composition, which he presented in a series of lectures at the Sorbonne and demonstrated on his first solo album, Variations. In 2007, Herman's self-named trio, which includes double bassist Matt Brewer and drummer Gerald Cleaver, released its debut effort, A Time For Everything. Featuring an eclectic selection of covers from Bjork to Britney Spears as well as original compositions, the album won over young audiences and jazz purists alike. In 2009, the trio followed up with Muse. |

Mindfulness Meditation/stress reduction
Beginning Jan. 21, every Thursday from 1 to 2 pm in
Mackinnon Blue Room (118). Contact Carol Dignam (819-822-9695).
Are you totally stressed out? Are you worrying about your school work instead of doing it? Are you feeling anxious or depressed?
Mindfulness is a powerful mind training technique which can have a variety of physical, mental and emotional health benefits. School and the pressures of a demanding schedule tend to put us into fight-flight mode - our left brain. Meditation essentially takes you out of your left brain, which is more negative, critical and uptight, and moves you into your right brain which is more positive, creative and relaxed.
Participants will have the opportunity to learn a variety of meditative techniques so that they may choose the one that fits them. |

Coleman Lemieux & compagnie
Dance, 8pm in Centennial Theatre, Students $15.
Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie pay homage to James Kudelka's stunning creations: Fifteen Heterosexual Duets (romantic duets of "remarkable... fluency and variety" (The Globe and Mail)), Soudain, l'hiver dernier (a bitter sweet duet between two men) and In Paradisum (a masterpiece of emotional power). "the Montreal-based Coleman Lemieux & Compagnie... excited the crowd, performing an excerpt from Fifteen Heterosexual Duets... The dancers ably embodied the characters, but it was their execution that dazzled - the split-second timing during complex partnering, and the gratifying lightness of low-to-the-ground leaps and lifts." Joy Goodwin (The New York Sun) |
